Why are Blood tests done?

Depending on your age, sex and medical history a range of blood tests may be recommended.
Not every test is required every time and the selection of tests is based on clinical judgement.

Routine Blood Tests include

  • FBC; This is also called a Full Blood Count; it checks for anaemia and also other conditions which affects the blood cells.
  • U&Es ; This is also called Urea and Electrolyes, It is used as a measure of Kidney function and a measure of the electrolytes (such as Sodium) in your blood.
  • LFTs ; This stands for Liver Function Tests.
  • Fasting Glucose; This is used to check the amount of sugar in your blood. (Do not eat or drink anything except water for 8-10 hours pre same)

Depending on your age/clinical history other tests many be considered; 

  • Hba1c; Measures the average blood sugar levels over the past 12 weeks ; it is used in the diagnosis and management of Diabetes
  • TFTs ; This is also called Thyroid Function Tests; and checks how your Thyroid gland is functioning.
  • Ferritin; this is a measure of the stores of iron in your blood
  • Vit B12/Folate; These tests will only be considered if you have symptoms of or risk factors for Vit B12/Folate deficiency
  • Lipids ; Checks Cholesterol Levels; gives a breakdown of “good” cholesterol HDL/“bad” cholesterol LDL and Triglycerides. (Do not eat or drink anything except water for 8-10 hours pre same)
  • Regarding Blood test for PSA; Prostate Specific Antigen; This is a blood test that screens for Prostate conditions including cancer and is recommended for men;
  1. Between the ages of 40 and 70 years and/or
  2. If they are under the care of a Urology team and testing has been advised.

This blood test should be requested by the patient at the time of their appointment.

If patients do not fit these criteria they must discuss their request for their blood test with the Nurse /Doctor at each appointment.

We also advise if you wish to have your prostate checked that you should request a physical examination with the Doctor for completion.

If you would like any additional blood tests taken please discuss this with your Health Care Professional.

You have had your Bloods taken; What happens next

Blood tests typically return from the Lab within 2 weeks.

Our GPs will review the results and interpret the results.

How you will be contacted

  • If any action or follow up from your results is required you will be contacted by us within 2 weeks.
  • If your bloods were taken as part of the CDM program you should already have an appointment scheduled with the GP for your follow up review, please ensure you attend this for review of your results.
  • If your bloods were taken at the request of an outside Consultant please ensure you collect a copy of the result from reception to take to your appointment.
