Skin Cancer Awareness for Men

According to the Irish Cancer Society, a significant one in eight men will unfortunately get skin cancer at some point in their lives. Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in males, and it’s caused mainly by the sun’s UV rays.
Many Irish makes are especially at risk from the sun due to the fairness of their complexion, and at Riverwest we are passionate about educating all our patients from young to old about the risks of the sun.
The skin damage that causes cancer can occur inconspicuously over a prolonged period, sometimes decades, and even on cloudy days UV levels can be high.
The Irish Cancer Society encourages us all to follow the SunSmart Code, which recommends covering up our skin, spending time in the shade and wearing suitable sunglasses and sunscreen. Individuals are also advised to pay particular care during outdoor and sporting events during the hottest months of the year or if they have fair hair or eyes or a lot of moles, or a history or sunburn.
